Text: Films

Ever since the advent of the first motion picture cameras in the late-nineteenth century, film has had an enthralling power over audiences across the globe. Films are much more than just a source of entertainment; they can be used to transmit powerful messages, to move, to inspire, and perhaps most importantly, to teach.

Films, like books, can transport readers into worlds they have never encountered or, in some cases, never even imagined.

Films provide audiences with an all-encompassing sensory experience - they engage not just our sense of sight, but also our sense of sound, dimension, and now with the recent development of 4-D cinema, even our sense of touch. Cinema is not just immersive, but for some, it is a more accessible way of exploring issues often tackled in literature.

Through character and setting, we can experience empathy for others and begin to understand the customs, traditions and values of people from other places and other communities. Watching films also allows us to explore what it is that connects us, whilst simultaneously celebrating our cultural differences.

In this chapter, through a study of Taika Waititi's film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, we will explore how films can help us to develop a better understanding of other cultures, and how they can be used to raise awareness of important social issues.
